Doing the right thing!

March 25th, 2010 at 01:38 pm

Today our school district agreed to a salary increase freeze for next school year in order to save the jobs of 24 people (custodians, secretary and teaching positions). It feels great that the vote was overwhelmingly for keeping people working. The battle between people vs. money has ended and the winner is PEOPLE.

"Reduction in force"

March 21st, 2010 at 07:40 am

Tomorrow we will meet with the school superintendent to discuss how our school district will handle the governor's proposed school aide cuts in New Jersey. Our district alone (three school altogether) will see a 70% decrease, which equals to $1.2 million less in aide. That's not even counting the $300k deficit will have if the town budget is not approved. I suspect that it will not pass. Our superintendent feels that 27 staff members across the board will have to be laid off and many extracurricular activities for the kids will be eliminated.

My husband and I were talking and we came up with a plan just in case I happen to be included in the proposed "reduction in force". This is what we will have to do: I can collect unemployment for a while (some people I know have been collecting for a year and three months already). Then I'll sign up to do substitute teacher work in nearby towns. The pay for that is between $80-$100 a day. That will buy us enough time for my youngest son to complete high school and then we would put the house up for sale and either move to our rental house or move out of state (if only we can buy a house cash and secure some sort of employment). I doubt I'd be able to find a teaching job when each school district will be letting go of many teachers. Our goal as of today is to complete as many home repair projects as we can before the end of June (paying cash for each one of them). We are in the process of negotiating a price to paint our house.

Sorry for the long post. I hope you all have a wonderful and peaceful week. I'll keep you posted on what happens tomorrow.

Some things are free

March 15th, 2010 at 01:40 pm

Most of you that I'm a big fan of money saving mom. About 4 weeks ago she posted a free offer for a full size bottle of Pantene Pro V so I filled out the online form and long and behold I got home to a full size Pantene bottle and 3 $2 coupons!
I've gotten samples of many products through her site.

Proof!

When it rains, it pours (literally)

March 13th, 2010 at 04:46 pm

It's been raining cats and dogs here and guess what we have? A leak in our roof! That means that we will have to spend a good chunck of change getting it replaced. We've done some patch work already by the skylights, now we're getting water by the fireplace and porch. We thought we had a few years to go, but it does not look like it would go according to our plans. My husband stresses out so much and although I'm not happy about it, I remind him that at least we have the funds to replace it. Somehow, I tend to look at the bright side of things. It is the original roof and the house is 21 years old.

Loving the weather

March 7th, 2010 at 02:30 pm

It was a great weekend weather wise in northern NJ. I was able to wash and hang clothes to dry outside (bedsheets, comforters and all). I still have clothes hanging in racks inside. The clothes are ready, but I'll do it later. I went for a nice walk again and my mood has been much better now that the spring is near. Went shopping and saved $4.24, which I automatically transferred from our checking to the ING Direct account.

------------------

Things are not looking good for NJ teachers. Governor Christie is looking to close the deficit in NJ by attacking public employees pensions and reducing state aide for schools. In our school district alone, the reduction is about $5 millon. Let's see what happens.

I hope you all have a great work week.
