The price of a short stature and menu

August 29th, 2010 at 06:40 am

My summer vacation is basically over; after 2 1/2 months, it's time to go back to work. No, I don't expect any pity from any of you. I feel fortunate to be able to prepare my favorite breakfasts, sit by the pool, read books and watch movies whenever I want. But now it's time to start earning my keep. With that comes some clothes purchasing expenses. I bought 6 pairs of work pants for about $120. That's not all though. On top of that, I had to spend $60 to get them hemmed because I'm just too short. I buy them pettite, but it still doesn't help. Oh well!
________

Tomorrow, I start following a budget. This is the menu for this week:

Monday: (Have all the ingredients at home)
Spagetti with meat sauce, buckhorn dinner rolls and corn.

Tuesday: (have all the ingredients at home)
White rice, beans, and grilled bbq chicken.

Wednesday: (bought lettuce)
Taco with toppings

Thursday: (bought baking potatos)
Bake potato, homemade chili, cheddar cheese and sour cream and vegetables.

Friday: (bought pasta and shrimp scampi)
pasta and shrimp scampi and breaded telapia.
(This is a special treat)

Saturday: Leftovers for the guys
(I'll be in the New York city for a Broadway Musical)

Sunday: Eat out; probably NY style pizza
The whole family will be going to New York City to visit Madame Tusseaud's Wax Museum and the M&M Store.

Total amount spend: $115.35 of $300 food budget (not including Sunday eat out expense). We are planning on consuming food items from the freezer and pantry for the second week of September to make up for the Sunday's splurge.

A nice birthday

August 23rd, 2010 at 04:52 pm

Yesterday, I celebrated my 41st birthday. We had friends and family over to hangout with us despite the horrible rainy, stormy weather. I really did not care one bit about having so many people inside the house. The kids behaved and we had lots of fun. When I sent the invitations I asked people not to bring any gifts. I think people feel funny showing up to a birthday get together without presents. Needless to say, I got about $100 in cash, a beautiful flower arrangement and a $25 Barnes and Nobles gift card. I was touched.

Super Squirrel

August 17th, 2010 at 04:53 pm

This pesky critter has been causing havoc in my house. He made it inside the house and tore a bunch of food boxes in our basement pantry. My husband finally caught him and took him as far as he could; hopefully he won't make his way back.

One phone call saved us...

August 17th, 2010 at 10:54 am

$1,059. We already have our auto insurance as well as an umbrella policy though GEICO. Today we called to see if we can get homeowners insurance for our rental house and primary residence and we did. I'm pretty excited about it! /

Extra Mortgage Principal Payment #2

August 14th, 2010 at 11:59 am

For all the newbies, My husband and I are trying to pay off our home as quickly as we can now that we have a nice emergency fund. It looks like we'll be able to contribute another $1,000.08 to our mortgage principal. I already wrote the check, which I'll mail the last week of August. Woohoo!

Two weeks left until I start working again! Our budget envelopes are good to go (money and all) for our ten month budget (September-June). Next Sunday is my birthday so we decided to have a bbq here with family and friends. I'll have to prepare for this during the week.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

These are for the taking

August 12th, 2010 at 10:04 am

Anybody out there with kids who have Ipod Nanos or a first edition ipod? They are Ipod socks/cover. I don't mind mailing (U.S. please)them if it goes to someone who would really enjoy them. First person to post that they want them gets them.

A tomato story

August 11th, 2010 at 07:30 pm

My neighbor Terry had two tomato plants sitting by her garage door that were begging for water and quite honestly I didn't thing they would survive. One day my husband asked Terry what was she going to do with them (we have a good relationship). She told him he could have them. That same day I planted them in a huge planter and this is how they look today.

Beach outing

August 9th, 2010 at 09:04 am

We went to Point Pleasant Beach yesterday and loved our time there. No swimming allowed though (the red flags were up). The boardwalk is small but sweet and the boardwalk cottages were lovely. I told my husband that if I hit the lotto I would like to purchase a boardwalk cottage. The thing is that I'd probably need more that $2 million to purchase one. Oh, well one can dream, right? Anyway not bad on the money front. We spent about $52, most of it on parking and beach badges. We did not purchase any food on the boardwalk because we brought our cooler to the beach.

I start work soon (September 1st). We have $3K left on our summer fund. I hope to be able to send a good part of it to reduce the mortgage principal. Crossing my fingers. I also purchased all of youngest son's school clothes and sneakers and paid college tuition for my college boy ($1,995.00). I have everything in place to start a serious budget come September. I'm also enjoying making a lot of our food from scratch and using less processed food. I'm going to try to keep this going even after I begin work again. I figured that I will not be as busy since I've already completed my Master and I won't be taking any courses this year.

I hope you all have a great week chipping away debt, saving a little bit and enjoying life.

Mortgage Principal #1

August 5th, 2010 at 09:32 am

We received our mortgage statement today and we paid
$1,416.38 towards the principal this month. I can't wait to see how much we can put towards the principal of our September payment.

A special treat

August 4th, 2010 at 06:07 am

My SIL called last night to tell me that she got really good tickets to see "In the Heights" (a Broadway show). It's been a while since I saw a show. I decided to treat myself for my birthday and bought a ticket for $97; this is pretty cheap considering I'll be in the orchestra section of the theater. I'm so excited!

In the kitchen

August 1st, 2010 at 04:57 pm

I spent a good amount of time in the kitchen today. I baked 9 large blueberry muffins (fresh blueberries) and 10 banana muffins. Dinner was rather easy though. We had some leftover lasagna from the freezer, corn and homemade rolls (buckhorn rolls). It's amazing how much money is saved by cooking from scratch and staying away from the processed food. Here is a picture of the muffins. I tried a new recipe from the Farmhouse Kitchen recipe book I received for my birthday and it's a winner.
