An update

June 23rd, 2012 at 08:39 am

I'm excited to tell you that we met one of our 2012 financial goals. We officially paid $30K towards the mortgage principal. The mortgage is paid up until October 1st. I doubt very much that we will add any extra principal payments until then. We barely generate any income during the summer months. When we do start working again in September, it'll be a catch up month for us.

June expenses have gone through the roof with more to come in the next few weeks. DS#2 high school graduation was Thursday. We survived the brutal heat in an open field where the graduation took place. We will have a pig roast the first week of July to celebrate with friends and family. He will be attending our local community college in September.

I have many books to read to keep me busy this summer. I'm currently reading the second book of the Hunger Games series and The Maker's Diet (really interesting).

Well this is it for this week. I'm really enjoying reading your blogs and a warm welcome to all of the newbies at SA. Have a great and frugal weekend.

P.S. I managed to put an extra $14 towards the mortgage principal. I bought DS #2 a white dress shirt with a tie that was required attire for graduation. DS#1 tells me that he has a white shirt that he thinks might fit his brother (too small on him). Sure enough the shirt fit perfectly and we used a tie we had on hand in the closet. I returned the shirt to JCPenney and got a $14 refund. He looked great!

Would you find it useful to follow 'give every dollar an assignment' principle? Assign a sum to every category both non discretionary and discretionary and there is only taking from other categories or earning more $$$ with part time work to cover a shortfall.

I was surprised to learn that 30% of spending on food went to restaurants since it's 33% more expensive DIY. When we learned how much convenience foods full of chemicals were used by restaurants, we more and more prefer home cooked meals.

Congrats on your mortgage goal, 30k really leads to some insurance of major progress! I hope that you enjoy the Hunger Games series. I liked it a lot more that I thought I would. I love that you are having a pig roast for your son! That sounds like a memorable celebration of a major accomplishment.
