403B vs. Roth IRA

July 29th, 2013 at 05:34 am

For the past few years, I've managed to contribute $6,500.00 to an AXA Equitable 403B account (deducted from payroll) and about $2K to a Roth IRA (electronically funded). This past June, I stopped the contributions to prepare ourselves for a summer with no income. I do want to resume my retirement contributions as of October 1st because I am playing catch up when it comes to my retirement. I was a stay-at-home mom until 2006 when I began working full time. I think I am going to switch my contributions so that I can fully fund the ROTH IRA and contribute the rest to the 403B. What do you think, should I contribute the most money to the 403B or Roth?

P.S. The 403B is not match by my employer. I'll be vested in a New Jersey PERS (Public Employee Retirement System) in another two years.

July update

July 20th, 2013 at 07:01 am

We are still managing to stay out of debt this summer even when there is absolutely no money coming in. We ordered heating fuel just a couple of weeks to the tune of over $1,400.00. We have to tap into the emergency fund to pay for this. We also received our new property tax bill and our taxes increased $197.00 so I have to make the changes to our monthly budget to reflect the increase.

The "Building Wealth Fund" still sits at 0 but I'm hoping that once I start working again in September I can put some money towards that. The food budget has be pretty low for the month of July because I have been using a lot of what we have in the freezer and pantry. Crossing my fingers that things start to turn around for us a bit with hubby's job situation. 'Til then, we'll just have to continue to navigate choppy water.

Well that's it for the update! Have a great weekend and please continue to keep ImaSaver in your thoughts and prayers.

Thinking of Ima Saver :(

Yesterday, Ima Saver posted that she lost her daughter and I cannot help but to think of her during this devastating time. Please keep her in your prayers or send her a virtual ((HUG)).

Euros and feeling blessed

July 1st, 2013 at 02:32 pm

I have 55 Euros and some coins leftover from my short stay in France. Any ideas on what I can do with them? I'm not interested in recuperating the exchange rate, I just want some American money for them.

I'm feeling blessed to have enough food in the pantry and meat in the freezer, although I can live without the meat, but hubby cannot. I hope to weather the summer without having to dip into the emergency fund more than what I'd like. I feel comfortable, if we reach September with $20K still in the emergency fund. I have planned meals for the month of July and hope to plan and stick to meal plans for August. My fingers are crossed. I will be renting movies, going to the gym, hikes and reading a lot for entertainment this summer to keep the budget in check.

Hope you all have a great work week!
