A quick update

July 24th, 2014 at 11:30 am

The lead teacher of the group I am working with for the ESY (extended school year)casually made a comment to me this morning about how she doesn't know how I make monthly payments on the BMW. I was tempted to say that I don't, but I learned the hard way to keep my "financial ways" to myself because my "way" is not always well received and I might open myself to rude comments. It's difficult for some people to understand that it takes sacrifices and time to get to where we are today.

Anyway, I just received the monthly bill for the furniture so I will transfer the money to pay off the bill in full. This transaction will end our consumer debt completely including the house. The next step is to resume saving and get ready for DS#2 Spring semester tuition payments which will be more than twice of what we are paying now for a community college. We are hoping to be able to fund DS#2 college education the same way we did for DS#1.

I know exactly what you mean. One of my coworkers mentioned that she has leather seats in her car. I said something about making sure to take care of them because they show a lot of wear in 10 years. She said "I hope I don't still have this car in 10 years" in such a horrified voice that I shut up.

My 11 year old Bug has leather seats, so that's why I said anything at all. I hope to keep it for another 4 at least.

I can imagine! I think in your case you bought new? But it also surprises me how most people presume any car purchase is a new car. I think people just tend to assume a lot, all around. I particularly remember when we bought our current minivan for $12k-ish after my second maternity leave. I remember jaws dropping to the floor when I mentioned we had paid cash for it. I just didn't know that was *weird*. My family pays cash for their cars. This was the double whammy of my spouse being out of work a few years, us being very young, and me having just taken several months off work to be home with a newborn. But it was only after some time that I also understood that everyone else thought we bought a brand new car for $25k+. HA!
