Payed Ourselves First

March 1st, 2016 at 12:23 am

Today was payday and the first thing I did was paid ourselves $1500 which went directly into our savings. Making a lot of progress ever since I've been doing that. I left enough money to get us by (after paying bills) until the next pay period. I don't like the feeling of being low on cash reserves. I also went grocery shopping after work.

We saw a really good movie yesterday called RACE. It is based on the life of Jesse Owens. I enjoyed it very much. It was also a wonderful day in terms of weather in my neck of the woods. We went for a long walk with the dog, ate lunch at our favorite pizzeria and then we went to the movie theater. Today, I felt much more energetic. We are looking to do something fun every weekend to break the monotony of daily routines. We are going to explore geocaching and hiking as soon as spring comes.

Well this is it. I hope you have a nice and frugal workweek.

Savings Goals update

February 26th, 2016 at 02:32 pm

We've finally reached the $35K mark of our savings goal by depositing $150 of the $176 we received from Costco rewards. I'm so much hoping to meet the $50K by the end of June which is the half way mark of the goal. Monday is pay day due to leap year, otherwise it would've been today. We should be able to add $1,500.00 on then. We have some debt but I decided not to pay those off until we meet the savings goal. After paying the house off, I did not like that we were cash poor. Besides the debt it's at a low interest rate so I don't feel overly anxious about it.

Tomorrow, we are going to catch a late lunch and a movie to celebrate our anniversary. I hope you all have a great weekend. ((hugs)) to all of you going through difficult times.

Anniversary/Feb./Savings

February 23rd, 2016 at 10:49 pm

I decided to close the month today. All we have is our 26th Wedding Anniversary plans and that is basically covered by gift cards (late lunch and a movie on Saturday). Our anniversary is tomorrow but my hubby works the night shift.

Good month overall and the rate of savings will be 56% of our net income as of Monday (pay day). I came under budget on several categories except for one. We went $35 over on the heating oil category. It was also a good month for snowflakes:

Snowflakes:

$3.28 ins. Reemb.
$3.49 ins. Reemb.
$1.00 scratch off ticket
$3.72 ins. Reemb.
$0.10 found at work
$3.00 lottery tickets
$3.72 ins. Reemb.
$176.23 Costco Reward Coupon
$1.00 Survey
$8.00 Swagbuck Amazon gift cards

Total: $203.54

Financial goals for next month is to reach a minimum 60% savings of our net income. Let's see...I think I'm pushing it quite a bit since we have a Spring break vacation at the end of March. Smile

Back from Impromptu trip

February 23rd, 2016 at 01:43 am

I got back from Florida yesterday. The trip was full of laughter, good food and really nice weather. I got lots of sun! My sister is such a wonderful and has a kind heart and I hate that she is on dialysis three times a week. She has one more test to go before she can go on the transplant list. Ironically, her husband received a liver transplant three years ago. I pray for her every day.

I went back to work today and boy was I tired! Finances are on track. I've had a few snowflakes to add to the Emergency Fund. I will tell you more about it next week when I close the budget for the month of February.

Inpromptu trip

February 10th, 2016 at 11:33 pm

On Sunday, I decided to make a last minute trip to Florida to get some sun. I know it's been cold in Central Florida but I think nothing like in NJ. I just don't seem to get better health wise. I've been fighting cold after cold since December and now my throat feels a bit tight and scratchy. I can't catch a break. My son will also be in Florida because he wants to be FL certified in his field. Most of the course is done online but he has to attend a one day course in person. We will meet up on Friday night and come back home together on Sunday night.

Finances are good, I'll just have an added expense for the airfare and money I spend while there. I felt it was worth it and I'll be sure not to spend too much money.

Christmas Gift return and DS#2

February 7th, 2016 at 08:24 pm

I received a really nice CuisineArt mixer for Christmas, just as I requested. Well, this weekend I talked to hubby and I asked him if he would be okay with me returning the gift. He said that it was my gift and I can do as I please with it. Long story short, I returned it yesterday and I received a credit on my credit card for $344.00. I'll use that money to have fun on our Spring break vacation.

On another news, my DS#2 trains on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he competed for the first time in a NAGA (North American Grappling Association) tournament in Philadelphia this weekend and he took first place for a gold medal. We are so excited for him and today we are going out to our favorite pizzeria to celebrate his win.

Finances are on track and we are still hopeful to be able to reach our savings goal for the month of February (50% of our net income). I really hope we make it!

Just a thought

February 4th, 2016 at 12:46 am

My hubby and I have always thought of saving money as if it was another bill that just has to be paid. I feel that keeping as much as our hard earn money is a top priority in our household finances and I feel obligated to be a good steward of the income we earn. As a result of this ongoing financial strategy, we've been able to cash flow our sons" college education and pay off our house. Is it easy? NO. Is it worth it? A resounding YES. It takes practice, lots of sacrifices, but the peace it gives us is priceless.

Grateful For Picture

February 1st, 2016 at 11:38 pm

Just a quick entry...I realized that I've not kept up with posting my weekly picture of what I am grateful for. I've been working on a Pay It Forward monthly project and this month we worked on gathering blessing bags for the homeless community in our area. I am so grateful and proud to have such caring friends and the project netted 33 blessing bags. This month's project will be diapers and baby wipes to be donated to the local battered women's shelter. I think it takes just a small act of kindness to turn things around for someone. If you are interested in embarking in a project similar to this, please check out the Facebook page PAY IT FORWARD NATION.

Here's what I'm grateful for:

Joining other bloggers

February 1st, 2016 at 02:09 pm

I decided to join other bloggers on the no spend February in an attempt to add 50% of our net income to our Career Change/Emergency Fund. It begins today! We will pay bills, buy groceries and spend on bare essentials. No eating out at all this month. I think we can, I think we can!

P.S. I will however, make a donation to the Pay It Forward February cause which is diapers and wipes to be donated to the local battered women's shelter.
