Aldi shopping trip

December 31st, 2010 at 08:56 am

My husband and I went to Aldi yesterday and this is what we got for $37.44 (24 cans of tomato sauce not in the picture). I was quite pleased because I think we've would have spend more if we went to the local supermarket. We decided to go to Applebees for lunch armed with a $25 gift card.

We are staying home tonight and watch the ball drop in Time Square. I hope you all have a happy, healthy and Prosperous 2011!

Another useful link!

Want to track your coupon savings? Here is a useful link: http://thecouponproject.com/2010/12/savings-tracker-2011-for-excel-and-google-docs.html
I first learned about this through moneysavingmom.com and I downloaded the spreadsheet and I'm already using it since my last grocery order (12/28) will be deducted from the January, 2011 budget. I love the spreadsheet and I decided that any savings from using coupons and discount cards will be used to pay down our mortgage principal at the end of each month. I'm going to make every effort to use coupons will all my purchases and I won't even have to buy the newspaper since one of the local libraries offers a coupon exchange that barely anybody takes advantage of it.

Hope you like the link and happy couponing!

Winter wonderland

December 26th, 2010 at 04:18 pm

It's snowing in New Jersey today. The first snow storm of the year for us. We're expecting about 13" of snow. I was wondering when we would get snow, since the southern states have been hit a couple of times already.

I'm glad Christmas is over and that I won't be back to work until January 3rd. I'm taking a few days to get rid of a few things that are just laying around and organizing quite a bit. 2011 goals will be posted soon also. The kids are content with all the great things they received for Christmas. My hubby and I did not exchange gifts since we did not need or want anything in particular and besides I rather save the money to go on vacation this summer. My husband, who is a school bus driver, received many gifts including $215 worth of gift cards from Panera, Walmart,Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. We were touched by their generosity. I think we'll be staying home New Year's Eve and watch the Time Square ball drop on TV.

December 23rd, 2010 at 07:18 pm

to say thanks to all of you for being so supportive. I feel fortunate to have healthy children, a roof over my head and jobs to help us meet our financial obligations and more. 2010 has been fulfilling in many ways, but was also filled with sorrow since my Dad passed away suddenly in June. My heart is broken, but time is slowly healing the pain of losing him.

From the bottom of my heart I wish all of you a Happy Holiday Season and a Prosperous, Healthy and Happy New Year.

Reporting on a 2010 goal and more

December 20th, 2010 at 03:42 pm

Well if everything goes according to plan, by the end of this week, we will be able to meet our savings goal for 2010. I'm still trying to decide what my savings goals will be 2011. I will post those after Christmas.

Christmas shopping is done since the teenagers in the immediate family will get money. My amazon.com account has hit $300 thanks to Swagbucks and credit card rewards. I will soon be able to order another $25 gift card from my amazon(Chase) credit card.

Thursday will be my last day at work until January 2nd. Woo Hoo!!!!! I'll take that mini vacation to get rid of some junk once again. On Christmas Day, my husband's family will be meeting at their aunt's house and I'm in charge of making and bringing the Puerto Rican rice for the party. I have no immediate family in NJ but I'm used to spending the holidays with my husband's family.

I hope you all have a great week and happy shopping if you're not done.

Reporting the usual and other

December 15th, 2010 at 09:10 am

Today is pay day and I will be transferring the usual $550 to the summer fund and $750 to savings. Once again, I'm being pretty aggressive, but I have to keep on pushing. Come January 1st, our first mortgage payment (after refinancing) and my son's college tuition payment of $1200 are due. I'm sending 1/12 of the morgage payment towards extra principal. February will be disasterous (is that a word?)since mortgage, tuition and property taxes are due. The property taxes alone are $2200 quaterly. New Jersey bites!

I'm looking into going to Florida for the month of February to see my Mom and sibblings. I think it'll do wonders for SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Wish me luck!

Now that the income tax season is coming, I'm hoping my sibblings will repay me for the expenses incurred when my Dad passed away. Not so much for the funeral expenses but for the airline tickets.

Happy Hump Day (Wednesday)!

Not so good day today,

December 11th, 2010 at 03:30 pm

but then again people going through very difficult times right now would say that they wish they had a day like mine. I guess I'm trying to be positive. Well, hubby and I went out to lunch by ourselves (sons were home completing their house chores). When we were done with lunch we had to pick up a few items from Walmart. Upon arrival, I realized that we lost my cell phone. Husband went back to the restaurant to check if anyone had returned the phone. It was an old phone (I've had for over 4 years now)but really there was no need to replace the phone any time soon. We turned off the service and got a new cell phone and luckily we were up for an upgrade. I decided to get the cheapest phone I can get since I don't have a text or internet package on my phone anyway. After the mail-in-rebate it cost us $29.99+tax. The salesclerk was very nice to us and gave us a phone charger for free.

I'm also feeling the effects of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) with the weather being so cold and the somewhat gloomy skies. I'm going to try my best to keep myself busy because I think its going to be a very difficult and long winter for me. I've decided that I'll visit my Mom and sibblings in Florida sometime in February. My right ear also hurts. I'm just a total mess! Please don't mind me.

Have a great Sunday!

Goal (not $$ related)

December 8th, 2010 at 02:54 pm

As I reflect on my goals for 2010, I can't help to feel accomplished financially but a big zero when it comes to taking care of me (my health, eating habits etc.) A family history of coronary heart disease (my Dad dropped dead in June of sudden cardiac arrest)and diabetes (Dad,Mom and sister were insuline dependent) compounded by the excess pounds does not help me at all. Normally I would say, I'll start dieting come the New Year, but I decided that it is time to stop making excuses for myself. I don't want to diet; I really want to make lifestyle changes. I have to learn how to say NO to foods that I KNOW are simply not good for me. I know that I will encounter some obstacles along the way, but it's up to me to pick myself up and strive to make good choices. I know I can do it; Yes I can! Would you cheer me on in this weight loss journey?

Our Christmas tree

December 4th, 2010 at 02:01 pm

DS#1 was a big help getting this accomplished. Our house decorated inside and out and it looks good. This is how our tree looks like.

My sons and I went to the mall after a fitting appointment for DS#2 varsity jacket. The boys bought a few things they needed and which will be part of their Christmas gifts. We had lunch there and left quickly after because the mall was pretty darn packed.
DS#2 will get his varsity jacket in about 8 weeks and the cost of the jacket was $190.

Have a great weekend!

Savings and DS#2

December 1st, 2010 at 05:51 pm

Payday was yesterday and I made the usual transfers: $550 summer fund (every two weeks deposit), $500 for DS#1 college tuition(monthly), $100 Christmas 2011(monthly deposit), $250 summer fund (monthly deposit) and $740 for savings (biweekly deposit). I know it's very aggresive, but doable for now.

My MIL is in the hospital with a pneumonia, but she's getting better. They might release her tomorrow. My husband has been by her side every day. He really loves his Mom!

DS#2 made $55 blowing leaves off the roof of two neigbors' houses two weeks ago and gave me $25(which I matched) to put in his savings account. Last Sunday he helped his Dad with an Autumn yard clean up and he earned $75 from that and he gave me $50 to put away in savings also. He says he wants to buy a house someday with a nice down payment. I guess all the talk I do about saving is paying off. I'm really proud of him!

I posted a few days ago that we were (are) trying like heck not to use the credit cards. Well, two credit card bills came with $0 balance. I was doing the happy dance! /
