Exploring other transportation options

April 11th, 2011 at 03:29 pm

My husband and I were discussing ways to forgo purchasing another vehicle. We already have a truck payment ($395) for another three years and college tuition for DS#1. We don't want to find ourselves in more car debt. We have explored buying a used car, but so far we have not found anything that is worth while. It finally dawn on me that I can probably take the train to work and back for about $75 a month. My husband is willing to buy a a used motorcycle to get around when weather permits. I think that this may work until DS#1 and DS#2 are done with their schooling.

Great job thinking outside the box to avoid debt!!

I agree...sounds like a creative idea. We are all so car-reliant. I love the idea of using public transit, but here in CT, it just isn't convenient enough. There's no train station in my town.

When we moved to SE Europe we wondered how we would make it without vehicles, but we now use the train, subway and buses almost all of the time without a problem. Of course, the infrastructure needs to be there to make it worthwhile, or else it leads to more trouble than it is worth! Still, if you can make it happen with the train, it will save on car payment, gas, and insurance all at the same time.
