Planning ahead

February 19th, 2012 at 05:47 am

I decided to start building a stock pile in anticipation to my DS#2 going away to a technical school in September. He will be on his own for over a year. The school that he is going to has no dorms so we will have to rent an apartment for him. We are hoping to get two other room mates to share the living costs. Two of his high school classmates are going to the same school. I'm teaching him how to cook certain easy-to-make meals and I'm sharing tips on stretching food budget. I don't want him to fall into the eating out trap. Not only is it expensive but very unhealthy.

I also began planning my DS#2 high school graduation party. I've already have a list of food I'll be serving and I will begin making food that I can prepare ahead and freeze. Our local supermarket has 2 litter Pepsi bottles for a buck a piece and tomorrow I'll be picking up this deal for the party. I figured that planning ahead will help me stretch a dollar.

Lastly, I leave you with Dave Ramsey's advice to a caller: "The trick is donít be afraid to be weird and donít fall for the cultureís input on your finances, because the culture is freaking broke. Weird is a good thing." (love this)

Oh wow, that is the BEST quote! There is nothing wrong with being weird and abnormal if "normal" leads to being flat broke, living beyond your means, and entirely financially unhealthy. I am perfectly happy to be abnormal if that is the case (and it is)! It's so much better to have some insurance of a better future because you are willing to be different.
