Financial Security?

July 21st, 2012 at 02:31 pm

I am almost certain that this topic has been touched upon here. Today I have come to the conclusion (for the time being) that financial security for me would be the ability to pay for my bills with a minimum wage job. What does financial stability mean to you?

Financial security to me means 1) ability to pay all my bills when due, 2) make regular payments on what I owe to others, and 3) save for the future. I still have a lot of trouble with #3, but I am working on it. If you are earning minimum wage and from what I can see, have paid off $40K on your mortgage this year, your are doing great and my hat is off to you. I am curious what your secret is, though.

Also, I have a question. How do you use the gift cards? As gifts, or maybe to supplement your other money in daily purchases?

crazyliblady, we are blessed to earn a lot more than minimum wage. As for the gift cards, I used them for the little "wants" in life.

Being young, financial security means being ahead on the bills, no consumer debt, and cash for a rainy day. Of course, at some point it should mean, absolutely no debt, and enough of a nest egg to live on and not have to work.

To that end, being able to live on two minimum wage jobs has always been a loose goal for us. Just having the idea that we could survive during down times and don't live up to our income. My parents have been extremely successful in forced/early retirement because they live on so little, so I feel extra motivated about this lately. The point is if you don't have any debt or bills you can live pretty darn well on that kind of income.

Being able to pay my bills, able to save, able to indulge in the little pleasures that are important to me -- and I would like to add to that, owning my own home, free and clear. That would be a huge comfort to me.

I think anyone who can underspend what they make is a blessing as well as smart!

Financial stability for me will be having some insurance that I can comfortably pay all of my bills, that I am debt free (that is going to take a little while yet), and that I am living in a place where I can feel confident and comfortable with my family, their lives, and educations. I would also like to own my own place outright, with enough land to lead us to be able to grow much of our own food.
