What would you do?

August 28th, 2015 at 05:29 am

I have an opportunity to apply for a teaching job at a town near my home. It is at time difficult for districts to fill job vacancies for this particular subject matter. In fact, as a new teacher 10 years ago (with no teaching experience) I was bumped to Step 9 in the salary scale because of the shortage. I like my job but we have gone through at least four principals in four years and that can be very difficult on the faculty and student body.

It seems that I will have a much better long-term earning potential at the new school district. I have some reservations if I happen to apply and get the job:

1. I'm wondering if they would match the salary step from my current job since my step doesn't match the year of experience.

2. Starting from scratch again. Interview process and new school.

3. Last but not least, I will be giving up my tenure. I have to admit that this is not as important to me because I know I'm a good teacher and can get tenure again. I will, however, will be giving up seniority. Currently second on the list in my department.

1. Less of a commute (cut in half)
2. New beginning
3. Long term better earning potential

What do you think? Should I bother sending my resume?

I watched a bunch of tutorials on youtube about canning and Friday, I made my first batch of applesauce. I bought the apples at the supermarket and I would not say it was cost efficient but I really wanted to try what I've learned. I can't wait to go apple picking this fall. Smile

Milestone/Snowflakes/ Target

August 20th, 2015 at 04:35 pm

I'm excited to tell you that we have officially met a 2015 goal of adding $15K to our Emergency Fund. After we bought the house and paid off all of consumer debt in order to be debt-free we were left with less than $5K in savings. As of yesterday, we've been able to save $15K, all thanks to not having any debt whatsoever. I love the peace and tranquility we feel by not having any debt. It is truly life changing. (not bragging, just really excited about it and really wish the same for all of my fellow bloggers). Hard work does pay off.

Somehow I tend to forget to report about monthly snowflakes. This month, I've redeemed $60 worth of Amazon gift cards and 2 $5 Starbucks gift card. One of the Starbucks card, I sent it to a friend's friend whose family lost their house to a fire. I sent them a $20 Target gift card along with the Starbucks gift card for the Mom of this family. I know how women are, they'll take care of everyone else but themselves and I thought she could get a coffee or a frozen beverage and enjoy it all by herself. So yeah, $70 worth of gift cards is not too shabby, especially when not a cent was used to pay interest.

As luck would have it (more of a blessing), while buying the gift card at Target, I decided to walk around to see if there was anything on clearance I could use. Sure enough, I was thinking of buying basic supplies for canning at Amazon but I found everything I needed for a fraction of what I would have spent had I ordered the stuff from Amazon. I also snagged four 3.5 lbs of Kibbles and Bits dog food for $2.44 each and 2 "summer packs" of dog treats which had four different kinds of snacks for $5 and change each. Lastly, Target also had some of their Yankee candles on sale and I grabbed four of them. Two will be used as birthday presents.

On another note, I usually buy things at Walmart but lately I've been so frustrated with the lack of opened cash registers, broken shopping carts and the overall look of their stores. On the other hand, Target prices are higher but the stores are so well kept, staff is friendlier and their carts are amazing no broken or squeaky wheels. It was a totally different shopping experience. Smile

This is it for today. I hope you all have a great weekend. I will be celebrating my 46th birthday on Saturday!

Pickles :)

August 17th, 2015 at 04:18 pm

I made 2 quart jars of pickles and another two of bread and butter cucumbers. I've used the recipe for the pickles before and we love it. The recipe for the bread and butter cucumbers is new to me. I hope they are good. I do have to find a place where I can get the spices cheaper to make it cost effective. I also used some of the canning quart jars I bought a long time ago for $6 for 12 jars. These are refrigerated pickles because I don't know how to can yet. I think tomorrow I will search youtube to watch canning tutorials.

Renovations completed

August 14th, 2015 at 07:38 pm

Bathroom project was completed today. I love it! We are doing a trial with a shower curtain. I just feel that I will be a slave to the glass door; I'm anal when it comes to cleaning and keeping my house up to my standards.

Here are some pictures:

Bathroom Reno update

August 11th, 2015 at 08:07 pm

We are on the last stages of bathroom renovation. Assuming that we will have an additional $300 to spend on last minute materials for the bathroom, we have about $1,600.00 of the $12,500.00 budget left to spend on the glass shower door. The budget allotted covered the laundry room and the bathroom. I'm hoping the door is less than $1,000. I have to admit that I became very frustrated when the vanity we picked did not fit and my brother-in-law ended up making the cabinet, which was okay with me. What really through me for a loop is the fact that the granite counter top cost over $300 for a 30 inch but very shallow cabinet. We are installing a vessel sink so we need something nice for it.

Today, I set up an electronic check to pay for DS#2 college tuition. Oh boy, this money is worth spending it but I can't wait to be done with it. One more year after this one and no more college tuition!

Still to pay water and property taxes.

Weekly update

August 9th, 2015 at 05:41 am

For the last couple of years I had the opportunity to work and extra five hours a week after school supervising homework club at $36 an hour. The first year I decided to work the extra hours because my husband was unemployed and this money really kept us afloat and saving for that entire year. The second year, I figured I'd do it and save the money. This year, I decided that I'm not going to work if the opportunity arises.

Now that we are completely debt-free, I am content with just working my regular hours which is enough to cover our monthly bills and college tuition for DS#2. Hubby's paychecks will cover savings. No need to hog extra hours at work when someone else may really need the hours and make some money.

Lots of money leaving our pockets this month. I need to set up an electronic check to pay for DS#2 college tuition due on 8/12 ($6700) and pay our property taxes online by 8/20 ($2100). Oh well, so is life!

I hope you have a restful Sunday! I leave you with what a Facebook friend posted on his status: "I wish that my money would have sex in my pocket and multiply".

I thought it was pretty funny.

Week #2 of 150 Days of Wellness

August 8th, 2015 at 01:34 pm

I am on day fourteen of no soda intake. I find myself making better choices when it comes to food but I did not exercise as much as I should of. I am controlling portions and using a small plate for dinner and absolutely no seconds. I will try my hardest to have a really good third week. I'm not giving up; the fact that I have abstained from coca~cola makes me proud of my will power. I love everything about Coke, how it tastes and especially the feel of the carbonation going down. Smile I keep reminding myself about all of the health issues in my side of the family.

Week #1 of 150 Days of Wellness

August 2nd, 2015 at 07:41 am

I am of day 9 of 150 Days of Wellness. I have been able to abstain from drinking coca~cola and I've made a conscientious effort to eat healthier foods. I also met the goal of exercising 5 days a week. I decided that I will not weigh myself during the challenge. I've become very frustrated with the scale and I really just want to feel better about me and improve my health.

This challenge is set to end on December 31st! Smile
