Any herbalists here?

November 18th, 2015 at 10:02 am

I am going to try a new herbal remedy to my sleeping problems (other than taking a Tylenol PM). It entails steeping lavender, valerian root, chamomile and a mandarin peel. I have read that the valerian root smells tremendously horrible before steeping. Does anybody know a replacement her that has the same sleeping effect of the valerian root?

Valerian root smells bad, but it's not so bad that you should substitute it out. Valerian is probably the most effective thing you can use for sleep. Leaving Valerian out of it would be similar to leaving the codeine out of Tylenol 3 with codeine. You won't get much relief. Passion flower and kava kava also help with insomnia. Have you tried melatonin? I take 9mg of melatonin about 3 hours before bedtime and it really helps.

I used to occasionally take natural valerian sleeping pills and highly recommend them also. I didn't have to take them long term, just every now and then. And maybe chamomile tea before bed would be helpful too.
